Two of the best-kept secrets in Wisconsin are Petenwell and Castle Rock Lakes. Pentenwell Lake is the second largest lake in Wisconsin, with 36 square miles of crystal clear waters. With plenty of public launch sites, you are sure to be able to drop in the boat, and go water skiing, swimming, fishing, or find some quiet water for canoeing. If you like staying active, then be sure to check out the annual Castle Rock triathlon, a marathon that has been put on for 20 years. There is also horseback riding opportunities along Castle Rock lake and canoeing the Wisconsin River.
Roche-a-Cri State Park has to be on the list of things to discover for the Arkdale area. The incredible and diverse terrain once served as a route to the French fur traders but due to glacial movement, a once island to a lake, the 300 foot mound not only provides an insight into the paintings and carvings of the past visitors, but only gives way to a panoramic view over 120 miles out. This view shows us over 400 acres of Arkdale grasslands, forests and a creek snaking its way through the terrain and riddled with trout and dramatic open cliffs.
The Pines golf course in Rome, Wisconsin is the area’s only 18-hole, par 72 course. It is rated by Golf Digest among the top 100 public golf courses in the nation. Lake Arrowhead has undergone an 18 hole expansion, Designed by the famous golf course architect, Ken Killian, this golf course is surely not going to disappoint the avid golfer. Excellent restaurants, community theatre, plus much more in the Wisconsin Dells. The Dells is located only 30 miles north of your Arkdale cabin and has plenty of recreation and live entertainment. The Dells is internationally known to tourists as the Waterpark Capital of the World.
