The Nook is a waterfront, rustic, studio-style two-room cottage ideal for couples or up to 3 bed-sleepers + a baby (bring your own crib) looking to spend some quality time together in a private home with a relaxed wooded, beachy setting right on some of Lake Michigan's most beautiful, swimmable, private lakeshore. 2-night minimum-except between Memorial and Labor Day when we rent by the six or 7-night stay, with Friday or Saturday arrival and departure. The cabin’s main room is furnished with a queen-sized bed, dresser, and DVD-only TV (the wifi may support Roku/smart channels, but this isn't assured). This room opens to an enclosed porch facing toward the beach and an eat-in kitchen toward the back.
Bed linens are provided; bring your own bath and beach towels.
The porch serves as a scenic sitting room with a small table and two chairs on one side, a twin bed/daybed on the other, and a serene view of the trees and nearby water.
The cottage’s full kitchen is equipped with place settings, cookware, and full-sized appliances, including a fridge, stove, oven, microwave, coffee maker, and toaster. A dining table and four chairs are nestled into the remaining space. Guests can open the doors on either end of this small cottage to direct a pleasant breeze through the rooms, giving it a quaint and restorative indoor-outdoor feel.
The bathroom is off the kitchen and includes a vanity and standing shower.
It's a rustic cottage. We want you to be aware that the furnishings aren't new, the dishes don't necessarily match, and the building is mostly the same as when built in the 1950s. We have Wi-Fi, but coverage varies and isn't assured. The Nook is cute and quirky, and most guests love its uniqueness. There is nothing like falling asleep to the crashing waves under a canopy of bright stars and waking to them lapping gently at the shore, sparkling like diamonds, beckoning you to take in an awe-inspiring sunrise.
As a guest at the Nook cottage, you’ll have full access to a clean, sandy beach area just a short flip-flop across the one-lane road. Make memories of swimming, combing the beach for stones, fishing off the pier, grilling, or chasing fireflies.
The Nook enjoys a beautiful, clear view of Lake Michigan. To make the most of the pleasant, shaded property, you'll have access to lounge chairs and an outdoor charcoal grill. Or, if you’re interested in some sun or stars, there are 2 picnic tables, a shared fire pit (byo firewood), and several nice Adirondack chairs (please leave them in place).
Rural cellphone reception, especially along the lake, varies. Most guests report getting calls and texts reliably, with spotty data, but some have little or no coverage. We haven’t had a landline in about a decade. Most smartphones and mobile carriers offer Wi-Fi calling as a feature, allowing you to place and receive calls over a Wi-Fi network (without cell reception and without using your phone’s minutes). That’s what we’ve used for years, and it works great. We recommend you make sure that’s an option on your phone and that you turn it on or inquire ahead of time with your mobile carrier.
Also, lots of messaging apps, such as WhatsApp, Snapchat, Facebook Messenger, etc, allow voice and video calls in addition to text messaging. As long as you have an internet connection, you can use these apps to make calls to other users of the same app.
Wifi coverage in the cottages allows for emailing and messaging apps (mentioned above). While it usually works very well, it can vary throughout the property and may or may not be sufficient to stream content everywhere or at all times. We’ll do our best, and the internet usually works great, but we’re only human (humans who don’t work in tech) and don’t guarantee you’ll have a strong signal during your stay. If you need a more solid connection, there are coffee shops & the library in town.
We want to make sure we're a match :)
The Nook is situated across a one-lane road from a sandy walk-out beach on the shore of Lake Michigan. The water is typically clear and refreshingly cold to quite cool and has a gradually sloping, sandy bottom that makes it ideal for swimming and wading. Guests are welcome to launch kayaks and canoes (byo) or hang out and enjoy the sand and sun.
About a quarter mile to the north, visitors can access a public pier on the Sturgeon Bay channel, where they can fish and watch the passing boats. If they want to venture further out into deeper waters, Lake Michigan is a great place to windsurf under the right weather conditions. There are also nearby places to commission a charter boat or guided fishing trip.
The roads and community surrounding The Nook are friendly and low-traffic, with neighbors of local residents and other vacation properties. Guests can feel free to walk or run in the area. There are also snowmobile trails nearby (as well as plenty of space to park trailers and recreational vehicles).
Up the road from The Nook, visitors will find an entry point to the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Nature Preserve. Here, you can explore more than 445 acres of protected land that includes beaches, sand dunes, ancient rock formations, aged trees, and open fields. Don’t forget your camera—the moderate 2.5-mile nature trail meanders past two local lighthouses.

My father and grandfather built the three original buildings that became Firefly Cottages in the 1950s and rented them as Johnson's Cottages on the Beach. These charming, vintage cabins, settled across a quiet road from the sandy shore of Lake Michigan, enjoy a wonderful view of the water.
We aim to provide you with a comfortable, homey vacation cottage with lots of character — a place where you can make lasting memories. Bring your adventurous spirit and enjoy a traditional Door County getaway! Feel free to email or text me (your host, Irene) with questions.
